Florida State has found that alumni and supporters
over the age of 62 want to enjoy the cultural, social and athletic benefits of living near an institution of higher education.
For this reason, the university is sponsoring Westcott Lakes at SouthWood, a
Life Fulfilling Community® (LFC) that is aimed at
moving traditional 'retirement' living to a whole new dimension by creating an environment for lifelong learning, optimum health and personal growth.
In addition to country-club-style services and amenities, Westcott Lakes will also offer a Life Care contract, which provides guaranteed,
unlimited access to on-site healthcare,
if ever needed.
The decision to sponsor this new community is based on the unique benefits offered to
members, to FSU students and faculty, and to the university as a whole.
The alumni and friends who reside in Westcott Lakes will be
connected to the university through campus privileges similar to those of faculty members — including access to libraries,
athletic facilities and cultural activities. Westcott Lakes members will also have the opportunity to
interact with, mentor and advise FSU students, providing a vast reservoir of wisdom, knowledge and
experience.
Benefits to the university will include affiliation agreements with colleges and schools
to provide internships and direct field experience for students — as well as
exchange opportunities in the areas of nursing, medicine, health and human
performance, and many others. FSU students will be integral to the community
through coursework, employment and volunteer efforts.
Perhaps most important:
A portion of the entrance fee paid by Westcott Lakes members will be reserved for scholarships
and professorships — providing FSU with a future income stream for educational enrichment.
This community will not only enrich the lives of those who live there, it will
create a new center of excellence for the University as well.
